Inclusive Description and Subjects for Cultural Heritage Materials

This workshop introduces the foundational principles and best practices of critical cataloging, providing attendees with practical tools for creating ethical and inclusive metadata. Participants will learn how critical cataloging, an extension of critical librarianship, informs more thoughtful and responsible metadata creation. The session will explore strategies for integrating diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) into metadata workflows, with an emphasis on selecting appropriate tools, controlled vocabularies, and thesauri that reflect underrepresented perspectives. Attendees will also learn about strategies for ensuring equitable and accessible descriptions, particularly for visual materials and digital resources. By the end of the workshop, participants will be prepared to apply inclusive metadata practices and consider cultural and ethical nuances as part of metadata creation.
